A pergola is an open structure that is unroofed. It may have a covering of open-weave, permeable material. A pergola does not require a building permit, provided it:
is not more than 3.6m in height, and
is not more than 20m2 in floor area, and
satisfies the siting requirements (placement on the allotment), which are set out in the Building Regulations 2018 (Schedule 3).
If constructing a larger pergola, you will require a building permit.

Soft Landscaping that is not considered domestic building works are what we specialise in.
The following examples of landscaping work are not generally considered domestic building work when carried out under a contract limited only to these works:
planting trees, shrubs, lawns and other vegetation
ornamental ponds and water features
outdoor furniture, sculptures, garden beds and borders
cubby houses and play equipment
driveways and paving
pergolas within guidelines
This means a registered building practitioner is legally not required for those works, regardless of the contract price.
How much deposit will you need to pay upfront?
Since our landscaping scope is not considered domestic building works, consumer laws on deposit caps and structures do not apply to us. However, we consider best interests of our clients and abide by the same guidelines for initial deposit.
10%, if the total quote price is less than $20,000 OR 5%, if the total quote price is $20,000 or more. This is to secure your job in our calendar and allows us to confidently start scheduling resources.
Cost of materials to be paid in full 48 hours before delivery.
20% of Labour to be paid 48 hours before work commencement and the remaining amount on completion.
How much should I budget for landscaping?
Being that our landscaping does not involve major structural works, costs are generally more budget friendly.
Kitchen gardens range between $8,000 - $20,000 depending on size.
Full landscaping ranges between $10,000 - $40,000 depending on size and scope, but can sometimes be more if complex paving or pergolas are involved.
Bottom line is, if you want a low budget garden, as is most people’s brief, think less structural and more soft-scaping.
