KIDS GARDEN CLUB
A fully facilitated kids gardening club can be established at your school. Run during the lunch break one day per week or fortnight, the children can join in as they please and get some soil under their fingernails.
Children will gain a sense of pride in their school garden as they learn how to grow their own food.
The garden club is a place where children can feel safe and included during their lunch break. It is especially good for reducing stress and bringing a sense of calm and responsibility.
STEM IN THE GARDEN
It all begins with an idea. A problem that can be solved with the collaboration of young minds. The young people of today will see Global Challenges of Climate Change and food shortages. Our pollinators, the bees, are surviving in gardens with no flowers. While bees and chickens alike, are suffering from disease that is decreasing their population.
The children of today must be STEM educated in order to become the leaders that solve problems. We have just the program to help them get started. Watch as our primary school incursions guide children to create solutions to real-World problems using Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math.
SCIENCE
INSECT & ENVIRONMENT OBSERVATIONS WILL HELP CHILDREN IDENTIFY THE INVISIBLE CREATURES IN WHICH THEY SHARE THEIR LAND AND VEGGIE PATCH
Guided activities will get children thinking about these little buggy questions and help them to appreciate our connected ecosystem.
How many insects can you identify?
How many legs do they have?
Do they have wings or shells?
What do they eat?
What micro-habitat do they live in?
Will they want to live in the insect hotel?
How do they benefit your garden?
What plants should we plant for them?
TECHNOLOGY
GET TECH-SAVVY BY USING IPAD APPLICATIONS TO MEASURE, ORIENTATE AND DESIGN
Applications like Compass and Measure are easy to use and allow children to understand distance and orientation when designing a veggie garden. Older kids may be interested in using visual design applications, like SketchUp, to create designs for their own home garden and surprise their parents with a printout.
ENGNEERING
USE TOOLS AND MATERIALS TO BUILD REAL-WORLD SOLUTIONS
BUG & BEE HOTELS
PEA & TOMATO TEE-PEE
MATH
DESIGNING A GARDEN IS ALL ABOUT PLANT SPACING, MEASURING DISTANCE, VOLUME OF SOIL AND COMPOST TO SOIL RATIOS IN PARTS.
Using rulers, Compass and Measure apps, and measuring tape, children will measure distance, create planting plans using plant spacing rules, and calculate volume of soil and compost needed for each garden bed.
